In response to the Covid-19 pandemic, we are still open but using new protocols including:
- You must call and set up an appointment before visiting for ANY REASON.
- Only approved adopters will be allowed in the building. If you would like to meet a pet, please look at our available pets page, and fill out an online application. Once you are approved, we will call you to schedule an appointment for you to meet them.
- Only 1 person will be allowed in the building at a time.
- Our hours have been reduced to 10-2 on Monday-Friday, and 10-12 on Saturday.
- Everyone MUST maintain a 6ft distance from each other, and frequent hand washing/use of hand sanitizer is required.
In addition, The Kentucky Board of Veterinary Examiners has required that all non-essential procedures including spays and neuters are cancelled. Our Low cost spay/neuter clinic will be closed until further notice.

The Humane Society of Nelson County is a non-profit 501(c)3 corporation which was formed in 1994. This organization cares for animals in Adoption/Volunteer Building during their stay at the shelter, and funds and oversees the Adoptions Program at the Shelter. The Humane Society also provides spay/neuter for shelter animals and low-cost spay/neuter surgeries for low income pet owners, offers behavioral modification and training information to help keep pets in their homes, offers humane education materials and visits to local schools, and pet therapy visits to nursing homes. Nelson County Animal Control and Protection is an agency of county government that serves our community by enforcing our local ordinance, responding to animal-related complaints, protecting the public from animals running at large, and picking up stray/lost companion animals. 502-348-1865.
Nelson County Animal Control Hours:
Open 8 – 4 weekdays and 8 – 2 Saturdays.
